Biography
John Peile (1838-1910), College head and philologist, entered Christ's College in 1856, graduated BA in 1860 and MA in 1863. He was elected a fellow of Christ's in 1860, became tutor in 1870, a post he held until 1884, and was appointed Master in 1887. Peile was also vice chancellor of the University between 1891 and 1893. He was teacher of Sanskrit at the University and published a number of books on the language and also on philology. He died in College in 1910.
