Biography

John Strype (1643-1737), ecclesiastical historian, was born in his family home in Strype's Yard, off Petticoat Lane, London. His education began at St. Paul's School and was completed at St. Catharine's College, Cambridge, where he graduated BA early in 1666. Strype was elected priest and curate of Low Leyton, Essex in 1669, and was instituted as vicar in 1674, a position he kept the rest of his life. His principal interests included collecting 16th-century family manuscripts and the composition of histories. His works included biographies of John Aylmer, Thomas Cranmer, Sir John Cheke, Edmund Grindal, and Matthew Parker, as well as historical items, including the Ecclesiastical Memorials (1721), Annals of the Reformation (1709-31), and the Survey of London (1720).
