Biography

Sir Frederic Madden, (1801-1873), palaeographer and librarian, was born in Portsmouth on 16 February 1801, the son of Captain William John Madden (1757-1833), Royal Marines, and Sarah Carter Madden (1759-1833), daughter of the Revd Arnold Carter, a minor canon of Rochester Cathedral. He matriculated at Magdalen Hall, Oxford, in July 1825. He was appointed assistant keeper in the department of manuscripts at the British Museum in February 1828, and promoted to keeper on 18 July 1837, resigning in 1866. He died in 1873. John Lydgate (1370?-1451?), poet, was born in Lydgate, near Newmarket, and was ordained priest in 1397. He was engaged as a court poet, and enjoyed the patronage of Humphrey, Duke of Gloucester, from 1422. In his later years he lived at Bury monastery. Lydgate wrote poems, allegories, fables and moral romances.
