He says that her letter "cut me up very much" and explains that he had replied to a letter from "Papa" [Lord Randolph Churchill] but that it had not been posted by the Page and describes his hopes of passing examinations in Geography, French and English dictation and composition. He says that he would like to visit Baron [Moritz] Hirsch and that he almost wrote a letter which would have been "painful" to her due to his "fatigue, the passage, the strange food, the cold, home sickness..." The letter contains several passages and phrases in French.
