b. Sible Hedingham, 30 May 1883; d. London, 30 April 1968. Studied at Cambridge c. 1900 - 1903, then in Paris and Nice with Jean de Reszke. Director of 'Die Zauberflöte' and Papageno in 1911 when Edward J. Dent’s English translation was first used. Singer and Director at the Old Vic opera company 1920 - 1924. Teacher in Adelaide, Australia 1924 - 1927,also some work in straight theatre. Toured North America in The Beggar’s Opera, 1928. Worked at Sadlers Wells Opera in the 1930s, then further teaching in Australia 1939 - 1945. Director of Sadlers Wells Opera 1945 - 1946.
