Biography

Herbert Deveril arrived in Wellington from Melbourne (where he had been employed as a photographer) in 1873 to take over the Photolithographic Department of the Government Printing Office. He was active as a photographer until the mid-1880s. He was commissioned by the New Zealand Government to take a series of photographs of New Zealand for the 1876 Philadelphia Exhibition.

361 x 264 mm. A view taken from the same position as Y3089B/24, but looking towards Lambton Quay and Te Aro Flats. In the foreground is a residential area with mainly wooden houses, while beyond in the harbour, ships can be seen moored at Queen’s Wharf, with Te Aro Flats in the distance.

364 x 257 mm. A view of the Government Building on Lambton Quay with three figures standing in the roadway in front. This is the handsome building which superseded the offices shown in Y3089B/27. Finished around 1876 (to the design of W.H. Clayton), it is a wooden structure looking deceptively like stone. The chimneys seen here were later removed in the interests of architectural harmony.

360 x 260 mm. A front view of this attractive timber building, with a square tower at one end and ornamental designs on verandahs and eaves. The house was designed in 1869 by W.H. Clayton.
