Biography

Herbert Deveril arrived in Wellington from Melbourne (where he had been employed as a photographer) in 1873 to take over the Photolithographic Department of the Government Printing Office. He was active as a photographer until the mid-1880s. He was commissioned by the New Zealand Government to take a series of photographs of New Zealand for the 1876 Philadelphia Exhibition.

Scope and Contents A miscellaneous collection of photographs, of various sizes, mounted on card. Most prints are captioned; titles given to uncaptioned prints are in square brackets. There are also 42 numbered captions on card (some appearing to have been cut from the prints?), in an envelope kept with the collection.
