The last Tasmanians
Three prints mounted on thin card and captioned on the reverse. The captions have been recorded as found. These photographs show head and shoulders portraits of some of the last representatives of the Tasmanian Aboriginal people.
Trugannie [sic], 1866
188 x 177 mm. A profile of Truganina (sometimes spelt Truganini and also known as Lalla Rookh), taken ten years before her death on 8 May 1876. For further information on her life see Bonwick p. 217 and 233.
Wapperty, 1866
186 x 179 mm. A profile of Wapperty taken two years before her death. Bonwick saw Wapperty in 1859, some six years before this photograph was taken, (Bonwick, p. 279).
William Lanny [sic], 1866
185 x 179 mm. A full-faced portrait of William Lanne looking to one side of the camera. Lanne for many years worked on whaling ships out of Hobart Town and died in February 1869 of cholera contracted on his return from a whaling voyage. For further information on his life see Bonwick, pp. 394-95.
