Biography

James E. Bray was a commercial photographer active in Australia. In 1865 he was based at 487 George Street, Sydney. From 1884-91 he had a studio in Camp Street, Beechworth, Victoria (Davies and Stanbury 1985, p.137).

60 x 98 mm. A carte de visite full length studio portrait of E.J. Dunn's mother, taken at Beechworth, probably in the late 1860's. The backmark reads: 'Photograph by Jas. E. Bray' (James E. Bray), Camp Street, Beechworth. Extra copies 1/6 each or 7/6 per half dozen. Extra copies may be had by sending the above number'. The number '73' has been pencilled on the reverse, presumably by the phgotographer.
