Biography

J. Jackson was a commercial photographer. Jackson's photographic business operated under several titles: Privates Bentley and Jackson, Rangoon circa 1865-circa 1869; Jackson and Lourie, Rangoon circa 1870; J. Jackson, Rangoon circa 1871-circa 1915. Jackson had premises at 15 Phayre Street in 1891 and 278 Dalhousie Street in 1910.

147 x 101 mm. View looking towards the elaborately carved wooden structure in which the priest's body lies, with spectators strolling among the flags and bunting in the foreground. The numerous ceremonies involved in the funeral of a priest draw spectators and participants from surrounding towns and villages and contribute an air of festival to the occasion. Scope and Contents 200 x 139 mm. Showing Thibaw (d. 1916), the last King of Burma 1878-85, and his wife and half-sister Supyalat, seated on cushions. Parts of the photograph have been retouched and the background painted out. After the surrender of the Burmese to British forces in November 1885, Thibaw and Supyalat were sent into exile in India where Thibaw remained until his death. Supyalat was later allowed to return to Burma and died in Rangoon some years later. Thibaw employed a court photographer...

The original date of foundation of the temple is lost in myth, but the buildings assumed their present form in the 1560s. A pencilled annotation on the reverse of the print includes the additional phrase 'from North entrance'. The ink annotation on the reverse states 'Photo by J. Jackson, Rangoon'.
