The property was purchased with a bequest from John Crane, an apothecary in Cambridge, who died in 1652, the revenue to go towards the relief of sick scholars. He also left his house in Cambridge for housing the Regius Professor of Physic.

In 1652 John Crane, a Cambridge apothecary, bequeathed to the University, for the use of the Regius Professor of Physic, a house on the south side of Regent Walk. It was subsequently required for the building of the Senate House and so was exchanged, in 1724, for one in Market Street.
