Biography
Walter Alvarez was educated at Carleton College, Minnesota (BA 1962) and Princeton University (PhD 1967). Studying geology at both institutions. He worked for American Overseas Petroleum Limited in the Netherlands and in Libya. He left the oil company to study Roman volcanics. Then he moved to Lamont-Doherty Geological Observatory at Columbia University to study the Mediterranean tectonics. Walter was awarded the G.K. Gilbert Award (1985), Penrose Medal (2002), Vetlesen Prize (2008), and the Barringer Medal (2013).
