Viscount Wolseley, 1890 - 1913
93 x 140 mm. Mounted on card. Head and shoulder side portrait of Garnet Joseph Wolseley (1833-1913), a distinguished soldier and army reformer thought by some to be responsible for the efficiency of the 'modern' British Army of the First World War. The side profile may be due to the fact that he was severely wounded by a shell in 1855, cauusing him to lose sight in one eye. Photograph by W. and D. Downey, 57 and 61 Ebury Street, London.
