Designed by Denis Santry, the monument is in the form of a rectangular column surmounted by squat Greek Doric orders supporting a sarcophagus. The foundation stone was laid by the Governor, Sir Laurence Guillemard on November 15 1920 in the presence of the French Prime Minister, Georges Clemenceau, then visiting Singapore. The cenotaph was unveiled by the Prince of Wales on March 31 1922.
