Biography

Ernest Brown was born in Middlesborough, England, in 1877. In 1893 he was apprenticed as a photographer to James Bacon of Newcastle. In 1902 he emigrated to Canada. From 1904 he worked as a photographer for C.W. Mathers in Edmonton. He bought out Mathers's studio and, in 1907, purchased his stock of historic negatives (including the stock of Boorne and May which Mathers had earlier acquired). He was in partnership with Gladys Reeves (d. 1974). Brown bought the stock of over a dozen Edmonton photographers to form the Brown Collection of historical photographs, part of the Alberta Archives.
