Biography

Clare Short was born 15 February 1946, the daughter of Frank Short and Joan Short; she was educated at the University of Keele and University of Leeds (taking a degree in Political Science). In 1981 she married Alexander Ward Lyon (who died in 1993), sometime MP for York, who had one son by a previous marriage.

Clare Short's career included: Home Office, 1970–75; Director, All Faiths for One Race, Birmingham, 1976–78; Director, Youth Aid and the Unemployment Unit, 1979–83. MP for Birmingham, Ladywood, 1983–2010 (Labour, 1983–2006, Independent, 2006–10). She was Chairman of the All Party Parliamentary Group on Race Relations, 1985–86; Member of the Home Affairs Select Committee, 1983–85; front bench spokesperson on employment, 1985–88, on social security, 1989–91, on environmental protection, 1993, on women, 1993–95, on transport, 1995–96, and on overseas development, 1996–97; Secretary of State for International Development, 1997–2003. She was also a member of the Labour Party National Executive Committee, 1988–98.
