Biography

Hyacinth Symonds was born in 1842, the only daughter of Revd. William Samuel Symonds. On 18 November 1871 Hyacinth married the naturalist Sir William Jardine of Applegirth (1800-1874) who had been recently widowed. There were no children from the marriage. Jardine died on 21 November 1874. Hyacinth became the second wife of the botanist Sir Joseph Dalton Hooker (1817-1911) on 22 August 1876 and bore him two sons, Joseph (1877-1940) and Richard (1885-1950). Hooker died on 10 December 1911. Hyacinth Hooker died in 1921.

Single letter from Hyacinth Hooker to Ida Darwin dated 9 August 1910 in which she offers congratulations on the news of Nora Darwin's engagement to Alan Barlow and gives news of her son Richard and his recent posting to Sierra Leone.
