Biography

Julia Maria was born on 18 February 1840, the eldest daughter of the American missionary, the Rev. Samuel Brown. She became a competent amateur photographer. In August 1862 she married John Frederic Lowder (1843-1902), a consular official with the British Delegation in Japan. She died on 18 August 1919 in Yokohama, Kanagawa, Japan.

Single letter from Julia Lowder (sent from Yokohama, Japan) to Ida Darwin dated 29 May 1893 noting receipt of a money order and briefly commenting on the success or failure of flowering plants. Also contains invoices and related correspondence concerning import of bulbs from Japan during 1891-1893.
