Biography

Jane Anna Maria 'Jennie' was born on 5 July 1856, fourth daughter of Champion Wetton of Joldwynds, Surrey. She was a singer and in the mid-1870s was studying in Leipzig where she met the composer, Charles Villiers Stanford (1852-1924). Despite parental opposition from the Stanfords, they were married on 6 April 1878 and had two children, Geraldine Mary (born 1883) and Guy Desmond (born 1885).

Single letter from Jennie Stanford to Ida Darwin dated 3 February 1892 in which she thanks Ida for her sympathy and offers her own thoughts concerning the difficulties surrounding a proposed marriage between Francis Jenkinson and Mildred Wetton, the sister of his late wife Marian Wetton. Marriage between a man and his dead wife's sister was then forbidden until the passing of The Deceased Wife's Sister's Marriage Act in 1907.
