Biography

Margaret Susan was born on 29 September 1843 in Shrewsbury, Shropshire, daughter of Josiah Wedgewood and his wife Caroline Sarah Darwin. She married the Revd. Arthur Charles Vaughan Williams in 1868 and they had three children: Harvey Wedgewood (b.1870), Margaret Jane (b.1871) and the composer, Ralph (1872-1958). Following the early death of her husband in 1875, she and the children moved to her family home at Leith Hill Place in Surrey. Margaret died on 20 November 1937.

Scope and Contents

Single letter from Margaret Vaughan Williams to Ida Darwin dated 11 September 1910 expressing sympathy for Ida following her recent accident. The letter also includes some family news and an account of visiting the Three Choirs Festival at Gloucester Cathedral on 10 September to hear the first public performance of 'Fantasia on a Theme by Thomas Tallis' composed by her son, Ralph Vaughan Williams.
