Born in Portsmouth in 1939. Educated at Christ's College, Cambridge. Held teaching positions at the University of Warwick, Manchester Metropolitan University (Professor of English and Cultural Studies), Wolfson College, Oxford (Charter Fellow, 1984/5), and visiting posts at the University of Adelaide and the University of Virginia.
