Newberry, Percy Edward, 1869-1949 (egyptologist)
Biography
Percy Newberry was born in London, 23 April 1868. He was educated at King's College School and King's College, London. He was interested in botany and archaeology and joined the Egypt Exploration Fund to assist with administration, 1884-6. He led the excavation at Beni Hasan and El Bersha, 1890-4, and worked at other sites in Egypt, 1895-1905. He was appointed Brunner Professor of Egyptology, 1906-19, and Honorary Reader in Egyptian Art, 1919-49, at Liverpool University; fellow of King's College, London, 1908-49; and Professor of Ancient History and Archaeology at Cairo University, 1929-33. He bequeathed his personal papers to the Griffith Institute, Oxford University, and his books to the Library of Egyptology (now the Library of the Faculty of Oriental Studies), Cambridge University. He died in Godalming, Surrey, 7 Aug 1949.
