Biography

John Helder (1699-), who lived near the Mere at Soham, Cambridgeshire all his life, was Steward to Lord Townshend, who owned the Soham estate and Mere, and was made Commissioner for the Ely and Soham Level in Middle Fen in 1758.

His account describes the major events on Soham Mere during his lifetime, both natural and technical, from breaches of the fen walls to fen drainage. It was dedicated to, and probably prepared for presentation to, George Townshend (1724-1807), 1st Marquess Townshend.
