Letter from Gertrude Goodspeed (Waban Massachusetts) to Siegfried Sassoon, 9 Jan. 1939
Letter from an elderly fan thanking Sassoon for his Sherston books, which she had enjoyed, wondering if her son who served in France from 1917-1919 had had similar experiences: 'your book somehow makes me feel as if a man could go through it all and come out clean ...You saw the sunsets, the birds and the flowers as well as the horrors'. Letter from Gertrude Goodspeed (Waban Massachusetts) to Siegfried Sassoon, 7 Feb. 1939
Thanking Sassoon for his letter and for telling her about his son George, sharing advice (on the effect of parental rifts on children and on the importance of being a good father), and remarking that reading 'The Old Century' had made her think of when her own son left for France.
