Biography

Sigfrid Henry Steinberg (1899-1969) was a scholar with expert knowledge in many fields including German history and literature, letter-forms, and printing history. He came to Britain from Germany in 1936 with his wife Christine and was interned briefly in 1940. He was editor of the Statesman's Yearbook (1946-1969) and other reference books. Among his own books was Five hundred years of printing (Penguin Books, 1955). He was a friend of Stanley Morison, who consulted him on many projects. He was one of the principal architects of the exhibition Printing and the Mind of Man in 1966
