Biography

Beatrice Warde (1900-1969), the 'First Lady of Typography', was a prolific writer and speaker on printing. She came to England from the United States in 1925 and lived there the rest of her life. After a short career as an independent scholar, writing under the name of Paul Beaujon, she joined the Monotype Corporation and became their chief publicist. Among her other activities was the foundation in 1940 of Books Across the Sea. She was a lifelong and close friend of Stanley Morison.

Beatrice Warde's papers were not kept together at her death, and this collection is miscellaneous. It contains chiefly her letters to her family (although not those published in Bombed but unbeaten (1941)); material relating to Stanley Morison; and various compositions by her.
