Biography
Ruth Frances Darwin, born in Cambridge on 20 August 1883, second child of Horace Darwin (1851–1928), civil engineer and manufacturer of scientific instruments, and his wife, Emma Cecilia 'Ida' (1854-1946) (née Farrer). Ruth was educated at home and attended Newnham College, Cambridge, from 1906 to 1909.
Darwin married William Rees-Thomas (1887-1978), a psychiatrist whom she had met when he served as Medical Senior Commissioner on the Board of Control, on 8 October 1948. It was his second marriage. His first wife, Muriel Hodgson Jones, whom he had married in 1917, died in 1934 leaving a son, Frederick Douglas (1920-1995) and a daughter, Aelwyn Minette (1922-2012).
Ruth Darwin died on 15 October 1972.

Ruth Darwin: correspondence and papers
The collection consists primarily of letters from Ruth Darwin to members of her family but predominantly to her sister (Emma) Nora Darwin, and correspondence and papers arising out of Ruth's work with the British Committee of the French Red Cross in France in 1917-1919.
