Biography

Kathleen Winifred Hughes was born in Middlesbrough on 8 September 1926. She gained her doctorate from the University of London and was appointed a fellow of Newnham College, Cambridge. She lectured on the early history and culture of the British Isles, with a particular specialism in the early Christian Church in Ireland. In 1976 she was appointed to the Nora Chadwick Readership in Celtic Languages and Literature. Her major academic publication was 'The Modern Traveller to the Early Irish Church (1977, with Ann Hamlin). She died on 20 April 1977.
