Born Kristiania [Oslo], Norway, on 16 July 1896. Member of the Norwegian Parliament, 1937-1949; Minister of Justice, 1935-1939; Minister of Foreign Affairs, 1940-1946; Minister of Trade and Industry, 1963; Minister of Trade and Shipping, 1964-1965. 1st Secretary-General of the United Nations, 1946-1952. Died 30 December 1968, Geilo, Norway.
