Biography

William Edward Gibb (1805-1901) was a Lieutenant, later Captain, in the East India Company's 4th Madras Native Infantry. In 1838-39 he went on a recruiting tour in the Carnatic, south India; in 1842-44 Gibb was part of the British expeditionary force that travelled to the Yangtze River in China, following attacks on British merchants trading in Canton.
