Biography

Cecil Dunn-Gardner (1827-1903), son of John Dunn-Gardner of Chatteris, Cambridgeshire, was the younger brother of John Dunn-Gardner (1811-1903) of Chatteris House and William Dunn-Gardner (1813-80) of Fordham Abbey. Cecil Dunn-Gardner's library was sold by Sotheby's, 21 June 1880, on his "leaving his present residence at Brighton".

'Catalogue of my library after sale June 1880. Those now crossed out were sold afterwards in July 1881'. The catalogue records Dunn-Gardner's remaining books, and additions made up to 1897, arranged alphabetically by author, with the prices paid. There are entries in pencil of 'books to be got', and pencil prices of books sold. There is also a draft annual summary of the number of books bought and money spent, 1880-97.
