Biography

Sir Thomas Simson Pratt (1797-1879) joined the army in 1814. He commanded land forces on the China Expedition, 1841, and in the assaults on Fort Chuenpi and the Bogue Forts, and was present at Canton, Shanghai, Nanking, and the signing of the peace treaty on HMS Cornwallis. Pratt was commander of the British forces in Australia, 1856-61, conducted the New Zealand war against the Maoris, 1860-61, and was appointed General, 1873. He married Frances, daughter of John S. Cooper, in 1827.
