Biography

Louis Cobbett studied at Trinity College Cambridge and St Thomas’ Hospital, returning to Cambridge in 1893 as Demonstrator in Pathology in 1893. The following year he became interested in diphtheria especially the production and effects of anti-toxin and culture of the diphtheria bacillus. With his student George Stuart Graham Smith, Cobbett studied the diphtheria outbreak in Cambridgeshire in 1900 tracing the spread of the disease by the examination of school and other contacts, the first large-scale study of its kind. Scientific investigator to the Royal Commission on Tuberculosis from 1902, in 1907 Cobbett was briefly Professor of Pathology in Sheffield and returned to Cambridge as lecturer in Bacteriology, Cambridge, 1908-1929.
