Papers relating to five generations of the Hailstone family, c.1730 to c.1930, from John Hailstone (1696-1753), commercial traveller, of York, to the sons of John Hailstone (1810-71), clergyman, antiquary, archaeologist, and restorer of Anglesey Abbey, Cambridgeshire, in the mid-19C. The largest section relates to John Hailstone (1759-1847), Fellow of Trinity College, Cambridge, 1783, Woodwardian Professor of Geology, 1788-1818, and Vicar of Trumpington, 1818-47; other sections contain papers of his brother, Samuel Hailstone (1767-1851), Bradford solicitor and botanist, and Samuel's son John (1810-71), noticed above. There is a small section of material from another son, Edward Hailstone (1818-90), of Walton Hall, Wakefield, antiquary and bibliophile, who left his collection of Yorkshire books and manuscripts to the Dean & Chapter Library in York.
