Biography

W.G. Cooper established a photographic business in Bridgetown, Barbados, in 1872 (Macmillan 1909, p.370). The firm exhibited prints at the Colonial and Indian Exhibition, London, 1886. In 1898 the firm had a studio in Victoria Street, Bridgetown (Fraser 1897, p.173). In 1909 Cooper had a studio at 9 Broad Street Bridgetown (Macmillan 1909, p.370). The firm is not recorded in the 1922 edition of Macmillan's 'The red book of the West Indies'.

Scope and Contents

232 x 179 mm. A view looking over a town square, with a fountain at its centre, towards a dock area. A number of masts of sailing ships are clearly visible as are various horse-drawn carriages and carts. A small crane can also be seen by the dock area indicating this was a trading port. Location unknown although most likely Bridgetown or Speightstown. Photograph by Cooper and Company (stamped in the bottom right-hand corner).
