William Alwyn Foundation

 Organization

Biography

The William Alwyn Foundation was set up by Doreen Carwithen following her husband's death in 1985. Carwithen worked closely with the then Alwyn Archivist, Anne Surfling, to publicise her husband's music. Following Carwithen's death in 2003, the William Alwyn Foundation in its current form was established, and continues to publish music, commission musical works, organize an annual Alwyn Festival, and promote the work of William Alwyn and Doreen Carwithen. There are many papers here pre-the formation of the Foundation, dating from 1990 onwards, which was the date at which Doreen Carwithen established the William Alwyn Trust, the precursor to the Foundation.
