Biography

The records make reference to three lords of the manor of Forncett, Norfolk (see MSS.Add.5923-5924): Charles Howard, 11th Duke of Norfolk (1746-1815), Bernard Edward Howard, 12th Duke (1765-1842), and Henry Charles Howard, 13th Duke (1791-1856). Manors had two courts. The court baron was concerned with the customs of the manor. It was run for the lord of the manor by his steward, and dealt with matters such as the transfer of land and the duties and services owed to the manor lord by his tenants. The court leet dealt with minor crimes and the more important cases arising from the administration of the manor.
