Founded as the Socirty for Promoting the Employment of Women in 1859 in London. Became a limited liability company in 1879. In 1926, changed its name to the Society for Promoting the Training of Women.

Founded to pioneer new types of employment for women and to improve their standard of education. By the early twentieth century the focus of the societies work changed to providing loans for career training and education.
