The name on the photograph is hard to read; it may be Xu Zhumu 徐志穆 and it is dated 15 Jun. 1983. The letter is written in Chinese calligraphy, from Fan Wentong 范文通, graduate student at Shanghai Normal School (Shanghai shi fan xue yuan 上海師範學院). He planned to write a book about Joseph Needham, and to have it published by Hunan People’s publishing house (Hunan ren min chu ban she 湖南人民出版社).

Mission of Help in Calcutta was very useful. Disappointed that young men were not attracted to the Cathedral. Miss Thornton "who has a wonderful way with her" reached many young women. Stockley did well at St. Stephen's. Missioners have gone to Madras.
