The name on the photograph is hard to read; it may be Xu Zhumu 徐志穆 and it is dated 15 Jun. 1983. The letter is written in Chinese calligraphy, from Fan Wentong 范文通, graduate student at Shanghai Normal School (Shanghai shi fan xue yuan 上海師範學院). He planned to write a book about Joseph Needham, and to have it published by Hunan People’s publishing house (Hunan ren min chu ban she 湖南人民出版社).

A letter from Carole Sivin to Joseph Needham and Dorothy Needham mentions the 'blue clay Joseph Needham head' which was made in Kyoto in 1974 ( NRI2/9/5/10).
